Biography of TMA President Stephen L. Brotherton, MD

The Texas Medical Association (TMA) elected Stephen L. Brotherton, MD, of Fort Worth, as its 148th president. TMA’s House of Delegates, the association’s policymaking body, elected Dr. Brotherton today during TMA’s annual conference in San Antonio.

Protecting patients from the unsafe expansion of scope of practice by nonphysicians and maintaining physician autonomy will be Dr. Brotherton’s top priorities during his presidency.

A past president of the Tarrant County Medical Society, Dr. Brotherton was speaker of the TMA House of Delegates for four years and vice speaker for three years. He also has served on the TMA Board of Trustees since 2005 and chaired the TMA Council on Health Service Organizations. His service on the Board of Trustees included membership on subcommittees on grants to physicians affected by Hurricane Rita in 2005 and Hurricane Ike in 2008, chairing the latter.

Dr. Brotherton was one of the first to advocate for an athletic trainer to assist dance companies, and implemented a program for the Casa Mañana Theatre dancers in 1988. He served as the company physician for the Texas Ballet Theater and the Metroplex Classic Ballet. He also is medical director of the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo and a senior orthopedic consultant to Texas Christian University (TCU) athletics. He operated a clinic at a homeless shelter for 12 years and now spends his free time volunteering at a free medical clinic at Cornerstone Community Center in Fort Worth.

A graduate of The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, Dr. Brotherton has practiced medicine for 25 years. He teaches at TCU, the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth, and the Fort Worth Affiliated Hospitals Orthopedic Residency Program. He has been lead author on published and/or presented papers on such topics as bilateral knee replacements, un-cemented hip replacements, spine fusions, and amputations in diabetics. The American Academy of Family Physicians recognized him for his teaching in 2002, and the JPS Health Network orthopedic residency program in Fort Worth named him Educator of the Year in 2004. In 2009, the TMA Resident and Fellow Section awarded him the J.T. “Lamar” McNew Award for teaching and mentoring.
