Now Accepting Gold Level Applications!

Submit your Gold Level application to TMA by 5 pm (CDT) on April 8, 2013!

We are pleased about your interest in the TMA Award for Excellence in Academic Medicine award program. The TMA Subcommittee for Academic Physicians developed a four-level award series to provide an opportunity for academic physicians to receive recognition by organized medicine for achievements in teaching, role-modeling, mentoring, professional development, and service. Please take a moment to review information for each of the four award levels (PDF) to determine which level best fits your most recent achievements. We hope that this award will be useful to faculty in qualifying for promotions or new positions, as well as other types of professional, job-related recognition.

Qualification for the Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels are through self-nomination. A single Platinum Award will be given each year and the winner will be selected from the Gold Level recipients, by a physician selection committee.

After approval of your application, you will be recognized by the TMA Council on Medical Education and Subcommittee for Academic Physicians at TexMed, in May, to receive a printed certificate. In addition, you will be recognized in TMA's award-winning newsmagazine, Texas Medicine; monthly e-newsletter, It’s Academic; and in the Handbook for Delegates for the next scheduled TMA House of Delegates annual meeting.

Bronze and Silver Levels
The 2012 application cycles for these levels are now closed. The 2013 application cycle will open this summer and we encourage you to check back for further details and to download an application.

PLEASE NOTE: The TMA Subcommittee for Academic Physicians has revised the eligibility criteria, based on physician feedback, for the Bronze and Silver levels. We encourage you to take a second look at the eligibility criteria for 2013 when it is released, as there have been several revisions from 2012.

Gold and Platinum Levels

Applications are now being accepted for the Gold Level and are due to TMA by 5 p.m. (CDT) on April 8, 2013. Consideration for the Gold Level is through self-application.

A complete application will require the following:

  • Application (PDF) form completed in its entirety.
  • Copy of your current curriculum vitae (optional for Gold Level but required to be considered for the Platinum Award)
  • Three letters of support. At least one from each of the following:

    1. Your dean, department chair, or other supervising faculty member;
    2. A current or former physician peer (a physician who is familiar with the quality of your work); and
    3. A current or former student or resident taught or supervised by you. Or, a letter from a formally recognized student or resident organization at an institution where you hold a current or former teaching position.

Recipients of the Gold Level who have included a current copy of their curriculum vitae with their application will automatically be considered for the next highest award level-- Platinum. No separate application is necessary to be considered for the Platinum Award.  Only one Platinum Award recipient will be selected each year by a physician selection committee. There is a $5,000 cash award for the Platinum Award winner each year.  Gold Level recipients will remain eligible for the annual Platinum Award for three years from the date of receipt of the Gold Level achievement, with no need to reapply during that time period. There is no cash award and no limit on the number of Gold Level recipients.

All applications are subject to review by the selection committee appointed by the TMA Council on Medical Education and Subcommittee for Academic Physicians.  You will be notified of your eligibility for the Gold Level and consideration for the Platinum Award by April 25, 2013.

PLEASE NOTE: For this award, it is important to note that active, paid membership in TMA for the past FIVE years preceding the date of this application is a minimum requirement. If you have not had active, paid TMA membership for the past five years, you will NOT be eligible and should not apply for this award.
