Application Cycle for 2015-16 TMA Academic Excellence Award Program has CLOSED

TMA encourages our academic physicians to apply now for the TMA Award for Excellence in Academic Medicine at the Gold Level. The Gold Level achievement is designed for the most accomplished physicians for achievements in teaching, role-modeling, mentoring, professional development, leadership, and service. To be eligible, you must have at least 10 years of service in an academic faculty position, and maintained active membership in TMA for the past 5 years.      

Those who qualify for the Gold Level also have the opportunity to be considered for the highest award level  —  Platinum. The sole Platinum Award recipient will be selected by a physician selection committee from among the Gold-Level recipients. The Platinum Level Award winner will receive a $5,000 cash award, generously provided by the TMA Foundation. To be considered for the Platinum Level Award, you must submit an application for the Gold Level.

General Criteria (minimums)  

  • Years in an academic faculty position: 10 within the past 15 years
  • Years of supervision of students/residents/fellows: 10
  • Number of TMA meetings/events attended: 5
  • Years of active TMA membership: past 5 years
  • Performance Milestones completed: 10
  • Role Modeling in Leadership, Advocacy/Health Policy and Community Service activities completed: 4   

Performance Milestones
To apply for this level, you must have completed at least ten 10 instances of the activities below, and at least one 1 from each of the three categories:

Scholarly Activities:

  • Prepared and successfully presented as part of a workshop, seminar, or research presentation at a peer-reviewed and/or CME-accredited local, state, or national meeting; or
  • Served as the author or co-author of publication(s) in a refereed scientific journal or textbook chapter. 

Mentoring:

  • Mentored students, residents, fellows or faculty members.

Professional Development/Recognition:

  • Completed an academic fellowship focused on teaching, medical education, quality improvement, advocacy, or executive leadership development;
  • Received a local, state, or national award of distinction for teaching, patient care, research, or service; or
  • Completed a formal professional development course or program, including certificate or degree programs.


Role Modeling, Leadership, Advocacy/Health Policy and Community Service

To apply for this level, you must have completed the activities in all 3 categories below

Leadership Roles in Organized Medicine; or Service on Federal or State Agency Oversight Bodies:

  1. Served in at least one of the following roles:
  1. TMA and/or local county medical society officer;
  2. Member of TMA or AMA House of Delegates; or
  3. Officer or member of a board/council/committee/ad hoc group within TMA or a county medical society; 

 AND

  1. Served in at least one of the following roles
  1. Served as an officer of another organization of organized medicine (e.g., specialty society, academic physician group);
  2. Voting delegate to a policy-making body such as a house of delegates within another organization of organized medicine;
  3. Officer or member of a board/council/committee or ad hoc group within another organization of organized medicine; or 
  4. Officer or member of an oversight body for a state or federal agency that impacts medical education or the medical profession (that is not your primary employer).    

 Participation in Advocacy for Organized Medicine:   

  • Communicated with at least one legislative or congressional member (local, state, or federal government) or a key member of their staff, regarding TMA priorities; OR
  • Participation in an organized medicine Capitol “advocacy day”.

Participation in Community Service

  • Involvement in community activities, programs, and/or non-profit organizations that impact the health and welfare of the community. 

A complete Gold Level application will require the following:  

  • Application (PDF) form completed in its entirety.     
  • Three (3) letters of support. At least 1 from each of the following:   
    • Your dean, department chair, or other supervising faculty member;   
    • A current or former physician peer (a physician who is familiar with the quality of your work); AND
    • A current or former student or resident taught or supervised by you.  Or, a letter from a formally recognized organization for students or residents at an institution where you hold a current or former teaching position. 
     

Award Overview

Nominations: Self-nominating or nomination by another TMA member using the online nomination form.   

Recognition received: Recognition in TMA’s award-winning news magazine, Texas Medicine, the monthly e-newsletter, It’s Academic, and in the Handbook Report for the next scheduled TMA House of Delegates annual meeting.  Invitation to attend TMA Council on Medical Education meeting at TexMed to receive framed certificate.  

Selection process: Complete an application form (required by all for consideration, regardless if nominated or self-nominating) and meet all eligibility requirements above. All applications are subject to review by the selection committee appointed by the TMA Council on Medical Education and Subcommittee for Academic Physicians. You will be notified of your eligibility for recognition at the Gold Level and eligibility of consideration for the Platinum Level Award in early 2016.

 Platinum Award: 

The Platinum Award is TMA’s highest honor for academic physicians.  A single Platinum Award will be given each year and the winner will be selected from the Gold-Level recipients, by a physician selection committee. To be considered for the Platinum Award, you MUST include a copy of your current curriculum vitae (CV) at the time that you submit your Gold Level application. A $5,000 cash award and trophy will be presented to the Platinum Award winner each year at TexMed, provided through a generous grant from the Texas Medical Association Foundation.  Gold Level recipients will remain eligible for the annual Platinum Award for three years from the date of recognition of Gold Level achievement.
