May 25, 2023

The Texas Medical Association Medical Student Section (TMA-MSS) has named the TMA chapter at Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (TCOM) as its 2023 Chapter of the Year. TCOM is part of University of North Texas Health Science Center.

TM23 Chapter of the Year AwardI was absolutely thrilled when I received word that our chapter had been awarded chapter of the year,” said medical student John “Jack” Shope, president of the medical school’s student chapter. “Our members strived to bring awareness to sociopolitical issues impacting medical education and health care. Our chapter also pursued advocacy at both the state and national level.”

TCOM’s TMA medical student chapter organized and hosted multiple immunization drives at homeless shelters, community walks, and free refugee health clinics.

“Students distributed over 130 flu shots this past fall. By hosting a monthly Walk with a Doc event at a local community center, the chapter has also committed to supporting preventive health care,” said Fariya Fatima, a TCOM student who nominated the chapter for the honor.

The chapter has sought to increase local medical student involvement in organized medicine by boosting members’ engagement with the Tarrant County Medical Society.

“I am so proud of what our chapter has accomplished this year and am looking forward to seeing all the fantastic things the TMA-MSS chapter here at TCOM accomplishes in the future,” said Mr. Shope.

The annual Chapter of the Year Award, which TMA launched in 1998, recognizes the TMA-MSS chapter that excels in upholding the Medical Student Section’s goals and policies for a better Texas. The award recognizes leadership, dedication, and service to TMA and the American Medical Association.

TMA is the largest state medical society in the nation, representing more than 57,000 physician and medical student members. It is located in Austin and has 110 component county medical societies around the state. TMA’s key objective since 1853 is to improve the health of all Texans.
