In addition to conducting their own business, the Texas Medical Association’s special interest sections hosted several activities that made for a successful Winter Conference held in late January and helped prepare physicians for leadership in TMA advocacy and in their own communities.
Among the top highlights:
- The “Pathways to Leadership” panel, hosted Friday, Jan. 27, by the Women Physicians Section (WPS), proved to be an exciting discussion on the various leadership roles within TMA. Sharing their leadership journeys were past TMA and American Medical Association President Susan Rudd Bailey, MD, and TMA-WPS leaders Shanna Combs, MD, and Tina Philip, DO. TMA Board Trustee Jayesh B. Shah, MD, discussed his experience with TMA’s International Medical Graduate Section.
- With the 2023 Texas legislative session under way, Saturday’s well-attended lunch-and-learn session, “Compromising for One Voice When the Issues Can Be Divisive,” was led by Amy Whited, a TMA Foundation board member. The lobbyist and executive director of Pink Granite, a women’s leadership organization, imparted strategies to encourage collaboration among physicians and their peers and among physicians and legislators when it comes to contentious topics. The session was hosted by TMA sections and sponsored by TMA Insurance Trust (TMAIT).
- The sections All-Conference Mixer held off site at Punch Bowl Social was a hit. Also sponsored by TMAIT, the event was a fun opportunity to network with prospective section members.
All sections held business meetings where discussions included potential resolutions in preparation for TexMed 2023, as well as nominations from the floor for leadership positions. The Medical Student Section welcomed its new chapter officers and discussed TMA’s signature advocacy event, First Tuesdays at the Capitol.
