QPP: Last day to submit data for the 2017 Quality Payment Program using the claims-based reporting method
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) developed the Quality Payment Program (QPP) to implement the two payment tracks required by the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA). The two tracks are the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) and advanced alternative payment models (APMs). The QPP is an annual reporting program that affects Medicare payment two years later. The first QPP performance year was Jan. 1-Dec. 31, 2017. In general, eligible physicians and clinicians who are required to participate in the 2017 QPP must report data to CMS by March 31, except for those using the CMS web interface and claims-based submission method. March 16 is the deadline for web interface users, and March 1 is the deadline for claims reporting. The claims deadline applies only to eligible physicians and clinicians who participate in MIPS at the individual reporting level and have chosen to submit data for the MIPS quality category through Medicare Part B claims for dates of service in 2017.

Participation in the 2017 QPP affects Medicare payment in 2019. Eligible physicians and clinicians who are required to participate in the 2017 QPP must report data to CMS by the deadline that corresponds to their preferred reporting method to avoid a 4-percent pay cut to their 2019 Medicare physician fee schedule payments.
If you have chosen the claims-based submission method to report data for the MIPS quality category for the 2017 QPP performance year, click on “CMS Quality Payment Program” above for details. If you don’t know if you’re required to participate in MIPS, access the MIPS lookup tool on the TMA MACRA Resource Center by clicking on “More” below. If you miss this deadline, your other reporting options include qualified registry, qualified clinical data registry, electronic health record (check with your vendor), and/or attestation on the new QPP portal. If you use these other options, all data must be submitted to CMS by March 31. If you have questions, contact the CMS QPP Service Center at (866) 288-8292 or by email at QPP@cms.hhs.gov.
