No stranger to vaccine hesitancy, a group of El Paso physicians took a creative approach to addressing and other health concerns for patients who may need it most. The result: The El Paso Physician, a monthly video broadcast on the city’s PBS affiliate.

With the help of a Texas Medical Association Foundation (TMAF) grant, El Paso internist Roxanne Tyroch, MD (pictured right), and her colleagues launched the program’s first episode discussing the benefits of staying up to date on shots, and encouraging patients to get vaccinated before they would expect to get sick.

The video was part of the Texas Medical Association’s 2023 Vaccines Defend What Matters program.

“We are so grateful to TMA and TMAF for making this [episode] possible. We really could not have done it without their help,” Dr. Tyroch told Texas Medicine Today.

She said the episode served as a unique way to educate listeners while having casual conversations with other doctors “straight from the source.”

“These are the conversations we have in the office with [peers]; we aren’t pharmaceutical reps or a hospital pushing [a product]. With COVID-19 vaccines specifically, we want people to know it’s still important to get vaccinated despite the public health emergency being over.”
