Subject: Texas Chapter of the American College of Cardiology Representation in House of Delegates

TMA Bylaws outline criteria for specialty or subspecialty representation in the House of Delegates as follows: (a) represent only a medical specialty or subspecialty for which there is a national examining board listed in Directory of Graduate Medical Education Programs Accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education ; (b)  be a Texas specialty society of at least 100 physician members, with at least 60 percent of its physician membership TMA members; and (c) be an active organization as manifested by an established constitution and bylaws, a slate of periodically elected officers, and yearly meetings.

The Board of Trustees receives the applications of all specialty societies seeking representation and must certify that all criteria have been met.  The House of Delegates, acting on the recommendation of the Board of Trustees, has final authority to approve acceptance of any specialty society.

Texas Chapter of the American College of Cardiology

At its meeting in February 2007, the Board of Trustees certified that the Texas Chapter of the American College of Cardiology meets the eligibility requirements as follows:

National examining board listed in the Directory of Graduate Medical Education Programs Accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education:   Certification issued by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

At least 100 physician members with 60 percent of physician membership members of the Texas Medical Association:  1,600 members eligible for TMA membership; 1,057 (66 percent) are members of Texas Medical Association.

Active organization as manifested by an established constitution and bylaws, a slate of periodically elected officers, and yearly meetings: Bylaws, roster of officers, and calendar of yearly meetings reviewed by Board of Trustees.

Recommendation 1: Approval of the Texas Chapter of the American College of Cardiologyfor representation in the House of Delegates.

Recommendation 2: Amend TMA Bylaws Chapter 3, House of Delegates, Section 3.227, Specialty societies qualifying for delegate representation, by adding as (8) Texas Chapter of the American College of Cardiology, renumbering the remaining societies listed in the section.
