Whereas, The Texas Medical Association supports the right of physicians who are required by hospitals to cover hospital emergency departments to receive compensation from hospitals for such coverage; and

Whereas, Hospitals receive Disproportionate Share Program (DISPRO) funds and other resources for the care of indigent patients; and

Whereas, In 2005, the House of Delegates referred a resolution to the Council on Socioeconomics calling for stronger and specific TMA action (Res. 405-A-05); and

Whereas, Physicians in Texas and throughout the United States remain uncompensated for providing care to indigent patients admitted through hospital emergency rooms; therefore be it

RESOLVED, That our delegation to the American Medical Association take a resolution to the 2006 AMA House of Delegates Annual Meeting calling for hospitals to use Disproportionate Share Program funds and other sources of revenue provided for indigent care to reimburse physicians who cover hospital emergency departments.

Relevant TMA Policy

130.016  Compensation for Emergency Department Care : Physicians who are required by hospitals to cover hospital emergency departments have the right to compensation from hospitals for such coverage (Res. 405-A-03).
