2005 Accomplishments

Although at the time of this report, final year-end figures and data were not available, TMA Foundation ended 2005 by granting nearly $320,000 to TMA and family of medicine public health and science initiatives, attracting new donors, and bringing back donors who had not given to TMAF in recent years. Despite the catastrophic storms in New Orleans and Texas that have affected philanthropic giving negatively, (particularly from health-related institutions in Houston) TMAF made the following strides in 2005:

  • Raised an estimated $824,890 through a variety of giving opportunities for individuals, corporations, and foundations;
  • Raised an estimated record gross amount of more than $261,000 through TMAF's 2005 benefit Jeans & Jewels.  TMAF commended Dr. Dennis and Mrs. Fredye Factor and Sarah and Alan Losinger, all of Dallas, for their outstanding efforts as event chairs;
  • Granted nearly $320,000 for 23 TMA, TMAA, county medical society, county alliance, and medical student public health and science projects, including Be Wise - Immunize, Hard Hats for Little Heads, and Minority Scholarship Program;
  • Recognized 13 new major donors, bringing the total of major gift donors to 80 (up from 45 in 2003).  Their names are part of a special donor wall on the 10th floor of the TMA building outside the May Owen Conference Room;
  • More than 1,200 individuals donated to TMAF, an increase of 6 percent over 2004;
  • More than $325,000 was donated by corporations and foundations;
  • Filled the new Young Physician Section position on the board with Christine A. Carman, MD, Frisco;
  • Elected new board members, Charles W. "Bill" Bailey, Jr., MD, Austin, W. Douglas Bailey, Fort Worth, Fred Ciarochi, MD, Duncanville, and HelenMari Williams, Arlington, Medical Student Section Representative;
  • Elected new officers, who serve a two-year term, A. Tomas Garcia III, MD, Houston, president, Susan Todd, Fort Worth, vice president, Susan M. Strate, MD, Wichita Falls, secretary, and Nick N. Shroff, MD, Midland, treasurer. In addition, J. Phillip Norman, San Antonio, was elected to the one-year position of executive committee member at large;
Activities for 2006

In 2006, the foundation will build on gains made in 2005 to increase fundraising contributions, work closely with TMA on development and funding of the agreed upon immunization initiative, and engage donors and potential donors in the mission and work of TMAF. Plans for 2006 include:

  • Attract new corporate and foundation funding partners that will help fund specific TMA public health and science initiatives;
  • Promote online donations through the TMAF Web site;
  • Keep donors informed of how their gifts are being used to fund TMA's excellent campaigns and the results those programs are achieving;
  • Expand TMAF's new Leadership Society (donors with annual cash contributions of $1,000 or more) to 100 individuals;
  • Execute a highly successful event at TexMed 2006 in Houston, TMAF's 13th annual benefit, Making a World of Difference, and its golf tournament;
  • Strengthen the foundation's long-term financial base by continuing to adhere to a grant spending policy that preserves the value of TMAF's assets and reflects wise stewardship of the gifts donors have made to TMAF and the programs it supports.
