Correct Code for Billing a Routine Venipuncture

What is the correct code for billing a routine venipuncture, 36410 or 36415?

Bill routine venipunctures with CPT code 36415. CPT code 36410 is not considered "routine" and represents a venipuncture "performed on an individual over 3 years of age, that requires a physician's skill." This does not mean you should use 36410 each time a physician performs a venipuncture; your documentation must support the necessity of a physician. Bill a routine venipuncture as 36415 regardless of who provides the service.

Refer to the Medicare Claims Processing Manual, Chapter 16, section 60.
