Patrick
Crowley, a second-year medical student at the University of North Texas Health
Science Center Texas College
of Osteopathic Medicine (TCOM), received the Texas Medical
Association Medical Student Section
(TMA-MSS) Student of the Year Award. The Arlington medical student received the
award today at TexMed, TMA’s annual conference, in Dallas.
“This award is truly the greatest of my career
as a student,” said Mr. Crowley. “Being selected as an outstanding member by
the colleagues whom I hold in such high esteem fills me with great pride.”
Since 1998,
TMA-MSS has recognized an outstanding student member who excels in furthering
the section’s goals and policies to improve Texas’ health care system. The
chapter aims to engage students in organized medicine by encouraging their
involvement in local county medical societies, TMA, and the American Medical
Association (AMA).
Mr. Crowley
joined TMA and AMA in 2014, when he started medical school. Currently, he
serves as president of the TCOM TMA/AMA Medical Student Chapter.
As a student, Mr.
Crowley already has taken an active role in shaping medical policy. He has
represented his local chapter in the TMA House of Delegates, the organization’s
policymaking body. And Mr. Crowley has attended advocacy days at the state and
national capitols to help influence health care legislation.
Christopher
Tan, immediate past chapter vice president, nominated Mr. Crowley for the award.
He said Mr. Crowley has encouraged fellow students to become involved in
medical policy advocacy.
Mr. Crowley is active
in research activities and volunteers at Open Arms Health Clinic, a
volunteer-run clinic. He also is a member of the American Academy of Osteopathy
and the American Osteopathic Association.
Mr. Crowley is
a graduate of The University of Texas at Austin in 2014 with degrees in psychology
and philosophy. He is a member of the TCOM class of 2018.
“I hope to
continue to work to serve the great Texas Medical Association,” Mr. Crowley
said, “both as a student and as a doctor."
TMA is the largest state medical society in the nation,
representing more than 49,000 physician and medical student members. It is
located in Austin and has 110 component county medical societies around the
state. TMA’s key objective since 1853 is to improve the health of all Texans.
