Deadline Details

New CME Requirements Apply to License Renewals on or After Sept. 1, 2020.
All physicians who renew their medical license after Sept. 1 will be required to take at least two hours of CME that address pain management and prescription of opioids. In addition, direct patient care physicians will be required to take one hour of CME on human trafficking.
09/01/2020
Physicians need to complete at least 48 credits of CME every 24 months (in relation to the biennial registration period, not the calendar year). At least half these hours must be in formal, category I or 1A courses. You must report during registration with the Texas Medical Board (TMB) if you have completed the required CME. (Newly licensed physicians are exempt from the CME requirement the first time they register.) Be prepared to document your completed CME courses upon request from TMB, but don't submit documentation with your registration. TMB will conduct random audits to ensure compliance.
TMA will release two CME course in fall 2020 that will satisfy CME requirements for human trafficking and pain management/opioids. The courses will be available in the TMA Education Center at www.texmed.org/Education. The Texas Health and Human Services Commission has approved one course for human trafficking.
