QPP: Last Day to Apply for a COVID-19 Exception to Avoid a 7% Payment Penalty for the 2019 Quality Payment Program: Merit-Based Incentive Payment System and Alternative Payment Models
The data submission period for the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) under the 2019 Quality Payment Program (QPP) ends at 7 pm (CT) Thursday, April 30. This deadline applies to individual MIPS-eligible clinicians, groups, virtual groups, facility-based clinicians, and MIPS alternative payment models (APMs), such as Medicare Shared Savings Program Accountable Care Organizations and other types of MIPS APMs.

Participation in the 2019 QPP affects Medicare payment in 2021. MIPS-eligible clinicians who are required to participate in the 2019 QPP must report data to CMS by April 30 or receive a 7% MIPS payment penalty. However, because of COVID-19 you might qualify for an exception that would result in a neutral payment adjustment, meaning neither a MIPS bonus nor a 7% payment penalty in 2021.
The Texas Medical Association encourages physicians to review updated guidance from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and submit an "extreme and uncontrollable circumstances" application by April 30, if needed. For more information, click on "More" below.
