The Texas Senate today honored the state’s physicians and health care professionals who died over the past year fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.

During a special ceremony on the Senate floor, lawmakers adopted a resolution that recognizes the “unwavering integrity, commitment, and compassion” of Texas’ health care workers.

“When everything shut down, people still had medical emergencies and the work still had to be done. Please join me in recognizing the heroic men and women – front-line health care workers – who lost their lives during the fight against COVID-19,” said Sen. Dawn Buckingham, MD (R-Lakeway), one of the resolution’s sponsors. “Your selfless work and your memory will live with all of us into eternity.”

Sen. Donna Campbell, MD (R-New Braunfels), one of the resolution’s sponsors along with Charles Schwertner, MD (R-Georgetown), also honored health professionals’ memory.

“These Texans rushed to do their duty, continued to do their duty in spite of knowing that threat in the worst of circumstances,” said Senator Campbell (pictured above). “They were more than just their professional title, they were also friends, and parents, husbands, wives, and they left countless loved ones behind mourning their loss.”

Texas Medical Association President Diana L. Fite, MD, was on hand for the ceremony, which took place on National Doctors' Day, an annual nationwide appreciation of physicians.
