Update: The deadline to nominate a Texas physician for the inaugural Dr. Laurance N. Nickey Lifetime Achievement Award has been extended to Friday, Oct. 25.
Public health is one of the most diverse and multifaceted aspects of health care. From disaster preparation and disease surveillance to promoting healthy lifestyles and safe communities, public health touches every Texan and every corner of the state.
In celebration of the work Texas physicians are doing in public health, the Texas Medical Association has created an award to recognize a member physician who has made outstanding contributions to medicine through a significant commitment to public health.
Nominations are now being accepted for the inaugural Dr. Laurance N. Nickey Lifetime Achievement Award, which commemorates the late Dr. Nickey, a pediatrician and longtime director of the El Paso City-County Health District.
Dr. Nickey was a dedicated border health advocate who frequently reminded the public that "diseases have no passports." His accomplishments include starting an oral polio immunization program that administered almost 800,000 vaccines in West Texas and Southern New Mexico, and helping secure health insurance for newborns.
To nominate a physician, complete this form, which includes seven short-answer questions, before Friday, Oct. 25.
Nominees will be evaluated on their:
- Commitment to community;
- Leadership;
- Mentoring;
- Public health progress and achievements; and
- Impact across geographies or jurisdictions.
