Register Today: A Texas-Sized Fight Against Cancer

Distinguished_Speakers_Cancer

There’s a good chance you have been affected in some way by cancer: as a physician who has treated cancer patients, or maybe somebody you know has been diagnosed with or killed by the disease.

Cancer touches nearly every Texas family and is the second-leading cause of death statewide behind heart disease.

In 2007, Texas made a groundbreaking commitment to fight cancer through a multi-billion dollar investment in the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT). Fueled by CPRIT, Texas physicians and health professionals have contributed to globally recognized gains in cancer prevention, detection, and treatment.

However, Texas voters need to pass a state constitutional amendment on Nov. 5 so the state’s cancer-fighting agency can issue another $3 billion in taxpayer-backed grants for research and prevention.

If you would like to learn how Texas physicians and CPRIT grantees are saving lives, and what it will take to achieve a cancer-free future in our state, be sure to attend the Texas Medical Association Distinguished Speaker Series: “A Texas-Sized Fight Against Cancer: Progress and Perspectives From Four Texans Leading the Way.”

Presented by TMA and the Texas Public Health Coalition, the panel discussion will feature:

  • Kathleen Schmeler, MD, professor of gynecologic oncology and reproductive medicine at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center;
  • Mamta K. Jain, MD, professor of internal medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center;
  • Lorraine R. Reitzel, PhD, director of Taking Texas Tobacco Free, University of Houston; and
  • Carlton Allen, MS, director of colorectal cancer screening at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler.

The panel discussion is scheduled for noon-1:30 pm, Monday, Oct. 21, at TMA headquarters, 401 W. 15th St. in Austin. Lunch will be served at 11:45 am.

The deadline to register is Oct. 14.

Find more information, including how to register, on the event registration page or by emailing TMA Public Health Policy Analyst Anna Stelter.

The TMA Distinguished Speaker Series is made possible through a grant from the TMA Foundation.
