CDC Authorizes Novavax Adult COVID Vaccine
By Joey Berlin

There’s now a fourth COVID-19 vaccine option available in the U.S. after the federal government gave emergency use authorization to the Novavax vaccine for adults.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) gave its final recommendation for the two-dose vaccine on July 19, saying it would be available “in the coming weeks.” In a statement, CDC called the Novavax shot “an important tool in the pandemic” that “provides a more familiar type of COVID-19 vaccine technology for adults.”

Namely, CDC says the new COVID shot is compositionally akin to vaccines long used to fight other infectious diseases, such as hepatitis B, the flu, and whooping cough.

Following CDC’s action, the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) released key information on the Novavax shot series in a letter to vaccinators. DSHS said the vaccine should be stored in standard refrigerator conditions between 36 degrees and 46 degrees Fahrenheit, in its original carton, and protected from light.

Orders in DSHS’ Vaccine Allocation & Ordering System will be accepted daily, with no limitations on ordering.
