Need Help Paying for Medical School? Check Out These TMA Scholarships
By Tammy Wishard

Second-year medical student Aryana Garza is the first member of her family to attend medical school. Receiving the Texas Medical Association’s 50-Year Club Scholarship eased some of the obstacles she has faced in that endeavor.

“As a recipient of this scholarship, I am now able to concentrate my efforts on what matters most: becoming the best physician I can be for my future patients,” said Ms. Garza, who attends The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine. “My educational pursuits would not be possible without generous support, and I am deeply appreciative.”

Students in Texas medical schools with financial need can now apply for two scholarships available through TMA.

The 50-Year Club Scholarship, which totals $500 or more, is available for second-, third-, or fourth-year students attending any Texas medical school. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen. Physicians who graduated from medical school 50 years ago or more donate annually to make these scholarships possible for one or more deserving students.

The AAMAAL Scholarship – Muslim Women Inspiring Hope will provide seven $1,000 scholarships to female medical students in any year of study, with preference given to students attending UT Southwestern Medical School. Students must exhibit financial need, outstanding academic achievement, and community service.

Applicants must be a U.S. citizen and must submit an unofficial transcript and 300-word essay describing where the student sees herself in five years in relation to her medical career and community service.

Visit the AAMAAL website for information about the organization.

Apply today for either scholarship. To find out more about these scholarships and others, visit TMA's loan applicants page.
