Get Free Bike Helmets in Time for Holiday Giving in Your County
By Tammy Wishard

With the season of giving approaching, the Texas Medical Association’s Hard Hats for Little Heads bike helmet giveaway program is offering free helmets until Dec. 31 for you to give to kids in your community. Pairing helmets with bikes given through local toy distributions is an easy way to take advantage of this special offer.

TMA has 500 helmets to give away in eight counties in and around San Antonio. A grant from Baptist Health Foundation of San Antonio to the TMA Foundation supports Hard Hats events in Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar, Comal, Guadalupe, Kendall, Medina, and Wilson counties.

While supplies last, TMA will give up to 50 free helmets to any TMA member physician, county medical society, medical student chapter, and/or alliance who hosts an event before the end of the year.

If you can’t find a holiday giveaway, here are some other sites and events where you can provide helmets:

  • Urgent care facilities or emergency departments: Keep a supply of helmets on hand for kids who come in for a bicycle-related accident and need a new helmet.
  • Well-checks: Pediatricians and family physicians have embraced talking about safety with their young patients and backing it up with a helmet.
  • Preschool or school giveaways: Work with a school nurse, PTA, or physical education teacher to select a grade or group of kids who need a helmet. Or if a school gives bikes as a reward for achievement, pair a helmet with each bike.
  • Community youth organizations: Select a group or church that works with underprivileged kids to provide helmets.

TMA offers tools for a successful giveaway, including educational handouts in both English and Spanish), event signage, and promotional flyers.

Send an email to TMA to claim your helmets and receive an order packet. For more information, check out the Hard Hats event toolkit. If you have questions, email Tammy Wishard, Hard Hats coordinator, or call her at (512) 370-1470.

Hard Hats for Little Heads is supported in 2021 with a grant from the TMA Foundation with major support from an anonymous TMA/TMAA member donor couple.
