Waco Physician Elected Speaker of TMA’s House of Delegates

 May 15, 2021

Waco otolaryngologist Bradford W. Holland, MD, was elected speaker of the Texas Medical Association (TMA) House of Delegates, the association’s policymaking body. The house announced his election during TexMed, TMA’s annual conference, held virtually again this year from Austin.

Bradford Holland, MDDr. Holland steps into his new role after serving as TMA vice speaker from 2019 to 2021, during the worldwide pandemic. “Who could’ve foreseen the tremendous changes COVID-19 has wrought in the way TMA conducts the House of Delegates? I believe we rose to those challenges and made it through this trying year,” said Dr. Holland.

The House typically meets in person each year, but last spring’s shutdown  postponed TMA’s annual meeting. Months later than usual, TMA adjusted some procedures to hold a limited governance meeting online.

Dr. Holland worked as vice speaker alongside former TMA Speaker Arlo Weltge, MD, to lead the House of Delegates. He has held multiple leadership positions in TMA, serving on the TMA Board of Trustees; three years on TMA’s Council on Legislation; and as chair of TEXPAC, TMA’s political action committee. Dr. Holland was an early graduate of the TMA Leadership College, created to develop young physicians’ leadership skills. He has been an active TMA member for 24 years.

Dr. Holland also is a past president of the McLennan County Medical Society.

He is board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology and has practiced as an ear, nose, and throat specialist for 19 years. He is a member of the American Institute of Parliamentarians and is active in his specialty society, the Texas Association of Otolaryngology, having served in many roles there, including president. Dr. Holland is an adjunct faculty member in Baylor University’s Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders.

A graduate of Leadership Waco, Dr. Holland is past member of the Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce and served as president of the Waco Symphony Association. He also served on the board of directors of the Central Texas American Cancer Society.

Dr. Holland is a graduate of The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. His wife, Amanda, is director of Baylor University’s Department of Advising for Robbins College of Health and Human Sciences, and the couple has four children attending high school and college.

TMA is the largest state medical society in the nation, representing more than 55,000 physician and medical student members. It is located in Austin and has 110 component county medical societies around the state. TMA’s key objective since 1853 is to improve the health of all Texans.
