COVID-19 Vaccines: FDA Updates Dosage, Storage Information for Moderna Vaccine

The information below is current as of April 7, 2021.

Distribution and Prioritization

The Department of State Health Services (DSHS) hosts regular meetings of the Expert Vaccine Allocation Panel (EVAP). Find details below and check this DSHS webpage for updates.

  • FDA Updates Dosage, Storage Information for Moderna Vaccine: One vial of the Moderna vaccine contains 10 to 11 doses, depending on the type of syringe and needle used, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said in a revised emergency use authorization. In addition, vials can remain at room temperature for 24 hours rather than 12 hours, and the time to use the vaccine once the vial has been punctured has been extended to 12 hours rather than the original six, FDA said. Read more information. Dosage information per vial for the two other available vaccines remains:
    • Pfizer/BioNTech: One vial should contain six 0.3-milliliter doses. Vials can remain thawed for 12 hours, and six hours once punctured;
    • Janssen/Johnson & Johnson: One vial should contain five 0.5-milliliter doses. Vials can remain thawed for 12 hours, and six hours once punctured.

  • Webinar to Focus on Latest Vaccine Information: If you would like more information on COVID-19 vaccines, join the American Medical Association for a webinar featuring Peter Marks, MD, director of the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research at the Food and Drug Administration; and AMA President Susan R.
