Seven Ways TMA Is Helping the Medical Community Cope With COVID-19

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, you might be getting overwhelmed by the stress of caring for patients while protecting yourself and your staff.

The Texas Medical Association’s Committee on Physician Health and Wellness is committed to supporting your well-being during this time of challenge and distance.

Here are seven ways the committee is available for you:

  1.  More than 20 health and wellness CME courses. Topics include:
  1. Free practical toolkits that promote the nine dimensions of wellness: social, physical, intellectual, spiritual, emotional, mental, financial, environmental, and occupational. TMA’s Wellness Plugins resource center addresses all nine dimensions to help physicians, medical students, and residents mitigate the effects of emotional stressors and build resilience.
  1. Live CME webinar topics such as Promoting Wellness Through Social Media teach you how to utilize your institution’s or facility’s social media accounts – instead of a personal account – to advocate for good health and to provide credible information to educate the community. Choose a topic and submit your request for a webinar today.
  1. Register today for the Virtual Physician Health and Wellness Exchange on Oct. 24, provided by the committee in collaboration with UT Health San Antonio. During the exchange, Dina Tom, MD, assistant professor of inpatient pediatrics at UT Health San Antonio, will discuss how COVID-19 is affecting the culture of medicine. Dr. Tom will share best practices to build partnerships among multiple teaching facilities and other organizations to improve the health and wellness of the medical community. Registration is free for medical students.
  1. The effects of COVID-19 have brought many in the medical community to explore innovative approaches to wellness within their academic medical centers, practices, and hospitals. TMA is offering cash prizes to the winners of the first-ever virtual poster session. Submissions must fit with the abstract theme and include COVID-19 related material. County medical society physician wellness programs are welcome to apply. The deadline has been extended to Sept. 14.
    • 1st place: $750
    • 2nd place: $500
    • 3rd place: $300
    • Audience choice winner: $500
  1. Free health and wellness educational webinars for medical students and residents. Learn how to assess your risk for financial stress and identify options such as medical student scholarships, loans, and other financial programs with TMA’s new course, A Roadmap for Financial Health. Submit your request for a free webinar today.
  1. There’s more to come this summer: The committee is creating five more health and wellness courses. New courses will cover how health deserts affect the overall well-being of the medical community, and will filter out the confusion regarding the 2019 Texas law legalizing hemp and how it comes into play with the sticky wellness trend – cannabidiol.

Most of TMA’s CME programs are free for TMA members and their practice staff thanks to a generous sponsorship by the Texas Medical Association Insurance Trust
