Public health officials are investigating two reported cases of measles in El Paso, bringing the state's total to 17 cases since the beginning of 2019.
The two cases, an unrelated adult and child in El Paso County, are being examined by the El Paso Department of Public Health and Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS). DSHS says that additional cases may occur.
As of July 10, measles has been reported in 12 Texas counties this year: Bell, Bexar, Collin, Dallas, Denton, El Paso, Harris, Galveston, Guadalupe, Jefferson, Montgomery, and Tarrant. Most counties have had only one case. However, Collin and El Paso counties both had two cases apiece, and Harris County has had four cases. Texas had nine confirmed cases in 2018 and just one in 2017, DSHS says.
Nationally, 1,109 measles cases have been confirmed in 28 states as of July 3, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That is the largest number of cases since 1992.
