 How busy are you?

Yes, that’s a trick question because you’re a dedicated Texas physician, which means you’ve got almost no free time to spare.

However, if you’re interested in lending your medical expertise to cases involving driver’s licenses or concealed handgun licenses (CHLs), the Department of State Health Services (DSHS) is seeking physicians to serve on the Medical Advisory Board.

The board receives referrals from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) related to the use of a motor vehicle, a CHL application, or for a school bus license.

Referrals are generated in a variety of ways, including:

  • Accident reports from DPS usually indicating driver impairment or an event that could have affected a person’s ability to drive safely.
  • Driver’s license renewals that are flagged because of health concerns.
  • CHL applications in which the individual’s ability to handle a handgun safely is in question.
  • School bus license application background checks.

DSHS is specifically looking for physicians with expertise in psychiatry, endocrinology, internal medicine, family practice, and neurology. Applicants must be licensed to practice in Texas, and retired physicians are encouraged to apply.

At regular meetings, at least three members review each case file and issue an independent opinion. The opinions are then returned to DPS.

The meetings are conducted via conference call and do not require traveling to Austin.

If this sounds pretty good to you, submit an application and letter of recommendation on the DSHS website by July 19. The letter can be submitted with an application, or DSHS will follow up with TMA to obtain a letter on a TMA member’s behalf.
