HHSC accepted Texas Medical Association’s recommendation that the agency restructure the medical officer position to ensure physician input on the agency’s Medicaid and CHIP policies.

Dr. Van Ramshorst says he's excited about this new position, and he is grateful to colleagues and staff at TMA for mentoring him on Medicaid policy and advocacy.

"I have been working with Medicaid-CHIP policy since I was a medical student and have sought to educate myself and others about its importance," he said. "Working with Medicaid-CHIP is personal to me, as upwards of 80 percent of my patients are insured with Medicaid or CHIP."

Dr. Van Ramshorst — who is chair of TMA’s Select Committee on Medicaid, CHIP, and the Uninsured — will begin work at HHSC by late February.
