TMA has compiled resources on its Web site to help physicians comply with changes to the privacy and security requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Enforcement of the rules began Feb. 17, 2010.
The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act, part of President Obama's economic stimulus package, mandated the changes. They include requiring "covered entities," which include many physicians, to notify patients of certain breaches of their protected health information within 60 days of discovering the breach and expansion of security rules and certain privacy rules implemented under HIPAA to cover business associates.
