How to Generate Patient Referrals

Referrals from established patients are one of the best ways to attract new patients to your practice. But you can't just hope it happens. Here are four ways you can help make it easier for your patients to refer others to you.

  • Ask your patients for referrals. This office sign is a nice reminder that you welcome and appreciate their consideration:

The highest compliment our patients can give is the
referral of their friends and family to our practice.

Thank you.

  • Create a patient brochure patients can give their friends. (Try using one of TMA's practice brochure templates .) Place copies in your reception area.
  • Help patients remember your website address by listing it on your appointment cards, statements, receipts, educational handouts, and any other paperwork from your office.
  • Send handwritten thank-you notes to patients who refer friends and family.

By showing your patients appreciation, you give them something positive to talk about with their family and friends. "Thanking patients for coming to your office may seem strange at first, but it will be second nature once you start," says TMA practice consultant Laura Palmer. "Saying 'It was good to see you again' to patients coming for annual well visits, and 'I hope you are feeling better the next time I see you' to those who come in with an illness might be appropriate exit lines."
