San Antonio internist and undersea and hyperbaric medicine specialist Jayesh B. “Jay” Shah, MD, began serving as secretary of the TMA Board of Trustees in May 2023.
Soon after he started medical practice, Dr. Shah realized influencing patient care was not limited to the examination room or hospitals; he could impact health care through policymaking as well.
“Physicians are the ones who are truly vested in the care of our patients, and they need to guide the state health care system,” he said.
TMA members first elected Dr. Shah to the TMA board in 2018, and he chairs its Educational Scholarship and Loan Advisory Committee and serves on the board’s Physicians’ Benevolent Fund Advisory Committee.
He previously served on TMA’s Council on Health Service Organizations; Council on Health Promotion; Committee on Membership; Select Committee on Medicaid, CHIP, and the Uninsured; and TEXPAC, TMA’s political action committee. He also chaired the International Medical Graduate Section for TMA and for the American Medical Association. He has served as a delegate to the TMA House of Delegates and the AMA house as well.
Dr. Shah also was a co-chair of the TMA Foundation gala.
Once the president of both the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin and the American College of Hyperbaric Medicine, Dr. Shah also chaired the American College of Clinical Wound Specialists. He is past president of the Bexar County Medical Society and the Texas Indo-American Physicians Society.
An expert and educator in wound care, Dr. Shah is chief executive officer of South Texas Wound Associates, PA, in San Antonio.
