Apply: Female Medical Student Scholarships
By Tammy Wishard

Female medical students with an eye on serving their communities can now apply for the American Muslim Women Physicians Association (AMWPA) Merit Award, just like Sejal Lahoti did.

Ms. Lahoti, a fourth-year medical student at UT Health San Antonio Long School of Medicine, received an AMWPA scholarship – administered through the Texas Medical Association – in 2021. She thanked TMA for its investment in her education to become a physician and plans to “continue as a leader of organized medicine in Bexar County and advocate for vulnerable populations.” She also plans to return to student-run free clinics as a physician volunteer.

Each spring, AMWPA offers three $1,000 scholarships based on academic achievement and community service. The scholarships are available for female students who are U.S. citizens enrolled in and attending any Texas medical school. The scholarships are one of the ways AMWPA fulfills its vision to promote women’s health, welfare, and education.

Scholarship applications are due Tuesday, March 15. Along with the application, the applicant must provide an unofficial medical school transcript from her medical school and submit a 300-word essay describing where she sees herself in five years in both the field of medicine and community service.

AMWPA members are Muslim women physicians, dentists, and medical students. The organization is based in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
