Help State in COVID Vaccine Outreach With New Grants
By Joey Berlin

You can help COVID-19 vaccines – and valuable knowledge about them – reach areas of Texas with low vaccination rates, and/or statewide, by developing a proposal for the Texas Vaccine Outreach and Education Grant Program, which is accepting applications for hundreds of thousands of dollars in grant funding.

The deadline for submitting proposals is midnight CT on Friday, Jan. 28.

The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) has launched the second round of funding under the program, with the aim of “ensur[ing] greater access and knowledge of COVID-19 vaccines through education and outreach to populations disproportionately affected by COVID-19.” DSHS is encouraging “community-based organizations, statewide organizations, and/or academic institutions who have strong, direct relationships with the populations they serve” to apply for the 12 months’ worth of funding.

This round includes two categories of grant opportunities:

  • Between $50,000 and $150,000 for proposals that address one or more of the following counties with low vaccination rates: Bell, Bowie, Ector, Grayson, Jefferson, Johnson, McLennan, Parker, Tom Green, and Wichita.
  • Between $250,000 and $1 million for “statewide organizations/organizations having a statewide approach, organizations addressing multiple counties, organizations addressing regions of Texas, organizations focusing on serving parents of children regarding COVID-19 pediatric vaccine safety and efficacy, or other at-risk populations (i.e. communities of color, rural communities, and/or Texans with disabilities).”

DSHS is partnering with Texas A&M Health Science Center on the project. More information is available in the request for proposal and Round 2 information page on Texas A&M’s website. For questions about the request for proposal and application process, email Texas A&M.
