The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) is responding to the recent spike in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations with a series of vaccination pop-up events at Walmart locations across Texas.

The pop-ups began last week and will continue through Aug. 8. The four-hour events feature a 16-foot video wall with vaccine facts and messages, an arcade-style “Take the Shot” basketball game, free frozen treats, and vaccine stickers.

Weekday events will be held from 3 to 7 pm, and weekend events from noon to 4 pm.

“Hospitalizations for COVID-19 are now rising across all age groups. While fewer young people get very sick, they can get and spread the virus, and we are still learning about the long-term effects,” DSHS Commissioner John Hellerstedt, MD, said in a release. “Tens of millions of people have been vaccinated with no ill effects. We know these vaccines are not only safe but also very effective. Achieving higher vaccination rates is essential to eliminating the threat of COVID from our communities.”

This week’s pop-ups begin with events today and Tuesday at the Houston Walmart at 4412 North Freeway. Check the full schedule for an event near you.
