TMA Foundation “Critically Important” to Improving Texans’ Health, New President Says

You may not find it surprising that Houston neonatologist Michael E. Speer, MD, will serve as the Texas Medical Association Foundation’s newly elected president.

That’s because during the past 45 years, he’s been active at every level of organized medicine, including terms as president of TMA and chair of its Board of Trustees. And as a member of the Harris County Medical Society, Dr. Speer has served on its executive board and as president.

"I see TMA Foundation serving two critically important functions. First, it amplifies the work of improving the health of all Texans by engaging those outside medicine to our vision of a healthier Texas," Dr. Speer said. “And second, it reinforces the role of physicians as community leaders who ensure all Texans benefit from the science-based initiatives made possible by TMAF donors."

Dr. Speer will serve a two-year term as president of TMA Foundation along with other officers who were elected at TMAF’s annual meeting held in May.

"Every TMA or TMA Alliance member can be a philanthropist at the foundation. We will ensure that your generosity makes an impact on the health of Texans and that you can feel proud of the work your philanthropic foundation is doing across the state," Dr. Speer said.

The foundation’s 2020 donors, giving societies and much more can be found on the TMAF website. For questions about the work of TMAF or making a donation, email TMAF Executive Director Lisa Stark Walsh.
