In recent scholarship application essays, medical students Sahifah Ansari, Sejal Lahoti, and Ida Vaziri shared personal experiences that have shaped their vision for medicine.
It was those visions and other achievements that won the three female Texas medical students the American Muslim Women Physicians Association (AMWPA) Merit Award.
Each recipient receives a $1,000 scholarship based on academic achievement and community service. Administered through the Texas Medical Association, the money is available to female students who are U.S. citizens enrolled in and attending any Texas medical school. AMWPA members are Muslim women physicians, dentists, and medical students. The organization is based in Dallas-Fort Worth.
Ms. Ansari is a first-year medical student at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Speaking from personal experience, she says she advocates for those with disabilities, aiming to make medical education more diverse and accessible.
Ms. Lahoti, a fourth-year medical student at UT Health San Antonio Long School of Medicine, plans to practice ophthalmology, serve patients with limited access to care in her local and global communities, and create training programs to develop the skills of young physicians in other countries.
As a woman of color and daughter of immigrants, Ms. Vaziri said she recognizes the health disparities minorities face and plans to advocate for underrepresented and underserved communities. She is a second-year student at Long School of Medicine.
