CMS Open Payments Registration Under Way

Registration is now open for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Open Payments Program, which requires CMS to publicly report data on items of value given annually to physicians and teaching hospitals.

That also means physicians and teaching hospitals who received any such gifts must register in order to review and dispute any data for the 2020 program year before it becomes public.

Reporting entities – such as pharmaceutical, medical device manufacturers, and distributers  –  must submit 2020 data by March 31, CMS said. The review and dispute period is scheduled to begin in April, though CMS has not released a specific date.

Physicians and teaching hospitals that registered last year do not need to register again, CMS said. However, “if it has been over 180 days since a physician or teaching hospital accessed their account, the account will be deactivated for security purposes.”

To reactivate an account, call the Open Payments Help Desk at (855) 326-8366.

Find information, resources, and reporting instructions on the CMS website.
