As the school year progresses, you might be getting more questions from parents about how COVID-19 may affect routine care for children with respiratory illnesses and how to treat them safely during the pandemic.

To help you answer questions you might receive from patients who use nebulizers or tracheostomy tubes, the Texas Medical Association has created a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document to guide those discussions.

Topics included in the FAQ include:

  • How routine care and treatment can be modified to reduce risk of COVID-19 transmission;
  • Which policies should be in place for a school to perform an aerosol-generating procedure; and
  • What to do if a patient’s school can’t follow infection control practices.

The FAQ is largely adapted from guidance published by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Association of School Nurses. It does not substitute for your professional judgment or the judgment of other clinicians in your practice.

You can find the FAQ and other information, tools, and resources on the TMA COVID-19 Resource Page, which is continually updated.
