The evolving COVID-19 pandemic has been a time of incredible disruption in patient care, and neither the state’s economy nor Texas practices are immune to the effects of this crisis.

To give Texas physicians the most up-to-date information regarding COVID-19, the Border Health Caucus and Texas Medical Association have created a weekly summer Zoom series focused on health care in the border region.

The Webb-Zapata-Jim Hogg County Medical Society will host this week’s Zoom meeting, which will focus on care in the Laredo area.

The meeting is scheduled for 7 pm (CT) Thursday, Aug. 6. Capacity is limited, so please register early.

Scheduled speakers include:

  • U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Laredo);
  • State Rep. Richard Raymond (D-Laredo);
  • John Hawkins, senior vice president of the Texas Hospital Association; and
  • Chris Traylor, former executive director of the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC), and former director of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

Topics include:

  • How to prepare for the next wave of COVID-19 patients;
  • Practice viability, including how the pandemic has affected practices’ finances, navigating financial assistance requests, and securing personal protective equipment (PPE); and
  • Working with CMS and HHSC to ensure patients have access to care.

The weekly Zoom series will culminate in a tele-town hall meeting scheduled for 7 pm (CT) Thursday, Sept. 17.

Mark your calendar now to participate in upcoming Zoom calls.

Remember, check the TMA COVID-19 Resource Center regularly for up-to-date news and the latest TMA materials for your practice.
