Retired Physician Helps Colleagues Who Need Financial Help

Retired Houston urologist Bernard H. Feldman, MD, recently made a generous gift to the Texas Medical Association’s Physicians Benevolent Fund (PBF), which since 1961 has provided assistance to Texas physicians and their families who have fallen on hard times because of poverty, sickness, disability, accident, or other circumstances.

Bernard_Feldman“I practiced urology for 40 years and during that time encountered three physicians who became debilitated. Their problems included depression, alcoholism, and financial instability. The PBF Wellness Fund financed the rehabilitation of all three physicians who were able to successfully reestablish their practice,” Dr. Feldman said. “I made this significant donation in hope of helping physicians in need and encouraging other physicians to donate to this meaningful fund."

The late May Owen, MD, a Fort Worth pathologist and past TMA president, had the foresight to establish and fund the Physicians Benevolent Fund to help colleagues who had fallen on hard times. Today the fund has three programs available to help Texas physicians.

  • PBF – Since 1961, more than 750 physicians have received more than $3.9 million in financial assistance to meet basic living expenses during times of financial duress. A portion of PBF donations provides funding to develop health and wellness CME.
  • PBF Wellness Fund – This new fund provides financial assistance to licensed Texas physicians who cannot afford short-term treatment for wellness issues that could affect their ability to safely practice medicine.
  • PBF Disaster Relief – Since 2005, 138 practices and their 293 physicians received more than $1.4 million to reestablish patient care in federally declared disaster Texas counties.

Contributions from physicians and their spouses have helped keep the fund alive. Contributions are tax-deductible as permitted by law, and may be in the form of honoraria or memorials.
