TMA Celebrates 25 Years of Bike Helmet Giveaways With Events Statewide in October

 October 1, 2019

The Texas Medical Association (TMA) will give away more than 3,500 bicycle helmets to Texas children in October to celebrate the 25th birthday of its Hard Hats for Little Heads program. Since starting Hard Hats for Little Heads in 1994, TMA has given away more than 325,000 helmets to Texas children.

TMA physicians and medical students, TMA Alliance members (a volunteer, community service and advocacy organization comprising physicians, spouses and partners), county medical societies, and other volunteers will host free helmet giveaways in their communities (see schedule below). At the giveaways, TMA Hard Hats event hosts also will emphasize to kids and their parents the importance of wearing a properly fitted helmet.

“This month represents a quarter-century of protecting the lives of Texas’ youngest citizens, one helmet at a time,” said Eman N. Attaya, MD, a Lubbock radiologist and chair of TMA’s Council on Health Promotion, which oversees the Hard Hats program. “Staying active is important, and the Hard Hats program allows us to share that message and help kids be safe when they’re riding their bikes.”

The motto for the Hard Hats program is “Get Moving. Stay Safe. Wear a Helmet.” TMA encourages helmet use for all sports on wheels: biking, inline skating, skateboarding, and riding a scooter. Studies have shown that properly worn bike helmets can prevent up to 85% of brain injuries.

new TMA video shows vividly how a helmet can protect a child’s head, using a melon. Some physicians use the melon-drop demonstration at schools and other Hard Hats giveaway events to provide a memorable illustration to urge helmet use.

Bike helmets also help protect against face, forehead, and neck injuries in crashes. And that’s important because cycling is the No. 1 cause of injury to children aged 14 and younger.

“I’m personally looking forward to helping fit helmets on children at one of our October events,” said Dr. Attaya. “Interacting with the kids is always a lot of fun, especially when we’re helping them prevent a potential injury, rather than treating them.”

Hard Hats for Little Heads was the brainchild of Larry C. Driver, MD, a Houston physician and TMA leader formerly of San Angelo. In 1994, a young neighbor fell off her bike and suffered a concussion. She was not wearing a bicycle helmet. He knew a helmet could have prevented her injury and went to work to create a bike helmet giveaway program so he and his physician colleagues could prevent future childhood brain injuries.

TMA adopted Dr. Driver’s idea, and the Hard Hats for Little Heads program was born. San Angelo physicians, with the help of the local police department, gave away the program’s first 500 helmets.

Hard Hats for Little Heads is made possible in 2019 through a grant from TMA’s philanthropic arm, the  TMA Foundation (TMAF), thanks to its Legacy of Caring and General Endowments, and generous gifts from an anonymous physician and spouse and donors to TMAF’s Make-A-Difference and Greatest Need appeals.

Below is a schedule of TMA’s Hard Hats for Little Heads events across the state in October, including in your community.  For more information about TMA’s Hard Hats for Little Heads program, please contact TMA Media Relations staff (contact info below).
