Tuesday is Oct. 1, so if you participate in Medicaid and/or Medicare incentive payment programs, hopefully you’ve already upgraded to the 2015 certified electronic health record technology (CEHRT).
But before you pat yourself on the back for meeting the minimum requirements for the Promoting Interoperability category of the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS), you might want to be sure you haven’t inadvertently turned off any of the settings or options within your electronic health record (EHR).
Accidental changes to your EHR’s functionality could prevent you from achieving the objectives and measures required under MIPS, which could hurt your Medicare payments in 2021.
Promoting Interoperability (formerly Meaningful Use, and after that called Advancing Care Information) is one of four MIPS performance categories that affect a physician’s future Medicare payments. The others are Quality, Cost, and Care Improvement Activities.
At minimum, the Promoting Interoperability and Improvement Activities categories require a continuous 90-day reporting period, so be sure you’re using the 2015 CEHRT correctly by Oct. 1 – about 90 days before year’s end.
