Fort Worth Nurse-Philanthropist Installed as 102nd TMA Alliance President

May 18, 2019

The Texas Medical Association Alliance (TMAA) has installed Lisa Queralt, a Fort Worth registered nurse and philanthropist, as its 102nd president. TMAA is the community service and advocacy arm of the Texas Medical Association (TMA), comprising physicians, and their spouses and partners. Ms. Queralt is married to John A. Queralt, MD, a Fort Worth radiologist and TMA member.

“I am excited to travel across the state to meet my colleagues and learn about what they are doing to make a difference in their communities,” said Ms. Queralt, who loves the diversity of Texas and TMA Alliance membership. One of her goals as incoming president is to increase the organization’s membership through greater engagement, community outreach, and advocacy.

One example of this is the new community health initiative TMAA launched in May, which targets the opioid epidemic with a prescription opiate awareness campaign. The campaign is providing members with toolkits they can take back to their communities with educational and drug-deactivation materials.

Another new TMAA initiative addresses human trafficking, and is modeled after a pilot project by the Lubbock County Medical Society. TMAA plans to increase awareness by urging the state to add the National Human Trafficking Resource Center hotline number onto highway signs, and to distribute stickers to help victims.

“Advocacy is one of the alliance’s strengths,” said Lisa, as she prefers to be called. She is leading the charge to bring the TMA Alliance’s and TMA’s award-winning grassroots advocacy program, First Tuesdays at the Capitol, to legislative districts statewide this fall. For more than a decade, physicians, alliance members, and medical student members have visited lawmakers at the Capitol on each first Tuesday of the months during the legislative session.

Lisa has been an active member of the Tarrant County Medical Society Alliance for more than two decades. She has served as its president, as Medicine Ball fundraiser chair, and on the board of directors of the Immunization Collaboration of Tarrant County. At the state level, she has served on the TMAA Board of Directors for five years as vice president-elect, and vice president for community health, and for membership. Since 2014, she has served on the board of TEXPAC, TMA’s political action committee.

In her community, Lisa co-chaired the Jewel Charity Ball for Cook Children’s Hospital in 2017. She also served as advisor to the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority chapter at Texas Christian University for 15 years.

Lisa received a bachelor of science degree in nursing from Baylor University in Dallas and a master of science in nursing from California State University in Sacramento. She and her husband have a daughter who also is a nurse.

TMA is the largest state medical society in the nation, representing nearly 53,000 physician and medical student members. It is located in Austin and has 110 component county medical societies around the state. TMA’s key objective since 1853 is to improve the health of all Texans.
