2,300 Texas Kids to Receive Free Helmets From TMA in May

April 25, 2019

The Bottom Line: TMA physicians and other volunteers will give children across Texas – including in your area – more than 2,300 free bike helmets in May. A bike helmet could save a life. Kids in your community can ride safely with new helmets from TMA’s Hard Hats for Little Heads.

WHAT: The Texas Medical Association’s (TMA’s) Hard Hats for Little Heads program will give Texas kids 2,300 bicycle helmets in May, designated as National Bike Month. TMA physicians and other volunteers will distribute the free bicycle helmets at events in communities across the state (see schedule below). They also will teach parents and children the importance of properly fitting the helmet for maximum protection.

This year, TMA’s Hard Hats for Little Heads program is celebrating 25 years of keeping kids safe. TMA created the Hard Hats program to help prevent child head injuries by encouraging helmet use for sports on wheels: bicycling, skateboarding, rollerblading, and riding a scooter. More than 325,000 Texas children have received a helmet since the Hard Hats program began in 1994.

WHEN: May 1-23 (events throughout the month)

WHERE: Communities statewide, including yours (see schedule below)

WHO: TMA physicians, medical students, TMA Alliance members (volunteers who are TMA physicians and TMA members’ spouses), and other volunteers – and 2,300 Texas children

WHY: Texas physicians urge Texas children to be active, and do so safely. Wearing a helmet that fits correctly is a simple way to prevent injury. Falls from cycling are the No. 1 cause of injury to children aged 14 and younger.

Hard Hats for Little Heads is supported in 2019 with a TMA Foundation grant thanks to its Legacy of Caring and General Endowments, and generous gifts from an anonymous physician and spouse, and donors to TMAF’s Make-A-Difference and Greatest Need appeals.

Below is a schedule of TMA’s May Hard Hats for Little Heads events across the state, including in your community. For general information about TMA’s Hard Hats for Little Heads program, please contact TMA Media Relations staff (contact info below).
