As you reflect on the news of 2018, take a minute to nominate top Texas health and medical coverage for a Texas Medical Association Anson Jones, MD, Award.
Five of the 21 Anson Jones award winners in last year’s contest were nominated by a TMA member physician or county medical society. That’s nearly one-fourth of the winners.
Radiation oncologist Sidney C. Roberts, MD, of Lufkin (right), nominated two East Texas journalists who reported on the hospital closure in Crockett last year. The winning print and TV coverage “brought attention to a health care issue that otherwise would have been ignored,” he said.
“Local reporters often are the unsung heroes of health care journalism,” said Dr. Roberts, who won the Anson Jones Physician Excellence in Reporting Award in 2017. “I was honored to both nominate and then present the awards to two who reported so well on a rural hospital closure that impacted an entire region’s health care.”
Your experiences in and out of your office give you a keen eye and ear for stories that accurately report local medical news, along with trends in medicine and health care.
The Anson Jones awards have categories for print, radio, television, and online news reports published or broadcast in Texas during 2018.
It’s easy to nominate journalists:
- Email your nomination to ansonjones[at]texmed[dot]org. All TMA needs is the reporter’s name, name of story (if available), date of broadcast/publication, and the media outlet. Please try to include a web URL.
- TMA will send the reporter a postcard with a hand-written notification that you nominated him/her, and for which story. (Nominations are due by Friday, Jan. 4, to allow time to alert the journalists.)
And if you actively provide news to your local media outlets, like Dr. Roberts, consider entering yourself in the Physician Excellence in Reporting category. The category is open to physician and medical students. TMA will accept contest entries until noon on Jan. 10, 2019. Enter your work today.
