Switching EHRs? Turn to TMA for Help

Switching electronic health record (EHR) systems can be overwhelming.

There are many things to consider when looking at a new EHR, including price, which functions suit your practice’s needs, and which vendors offer the right ones.

If you’re considering switching to a new EHR, the Texas Medical Association has information and resources to help you make an informed decision.

Start by reviewing the TMA publication, Switching EHR Systems. The self-study is designed to help you think through all aspects of the process and minimize risk and disruption of service as much as possible. The publication is free to members and is approved for one continuing medical education (CME) credit that is designated as ethics.

Next, the recently updated TMA EHR Product Comparison Tool provides TMA member physicians an assessment of seven EHR products that have a solid Texas market base (members only). The tool allows you to compare companies, product functionality, pricing, and interoperability capabilities.

Lastly, get a free technology contract review from Coker Group. As you review demonstrations and hear about the latest and greatest from EHR salespeople, remember it is the contract that seals the deal and defines the future relationship. TMA cannot stress enough the importance of a good contract review.

Coker Group’s contract evaluations focus on potentially unfavorable terms and conditions, and offer feedback on any concerns. While the evaluation is free, Coker can negotiate on your behalf, and TMA members are eligible for a 5-percent discount on fees for contract negotiations.

If you have any questions about EHRs and other office technologies, contact TMA's Health Information Technology Department at (800) 880-5720 or hit[at]texmed[dot]org.
