May 19, 2018

Keith A. Bourgeois, MD, a Houston ophthalmologist in practice for 30 years, was reelected to serve on the Texas Medical Association (TMA) Board of Trustees, the association’s governing body. TMA physician leaders in the association’s House of Delegates policymaking body reelected Dr. Bourgeois today at TexMed, TMA’s annual conference, in San Antonio.

“I am honored and very grateful for being reelected to serve a second term on the Board of Trustees,” said Dr. Bourgeois.

He has served in several leadership roles within TMA. He chaired TMA’s Council on Socioeconomics and served on the Council on Legislation. Additionally, Dr. Bourgeois was a district chair on the board of TEXPAC, TMA’s political action committee, and a delegate to the TMA House of Delegates.

Dr. Bourgeois also is past president of both the Harris County Medical Society and the Texas Ophthalmological Association. He also served on the governing board and as chief of staff of St. Joseph Medical Center in Houston.

Dr. Bourgeois graduated from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans. He has been in private practice since 1988 and cares for patients at a two-person ophthalmology practice in downtown Houston specializing in diseases and surgery of the retina and vitreous (back of the eyeball). He also has been treating patients at a satellite office in rural Columbus for the past 24 years.

“I plan to dedicate my next term on the TMA Board of Trustees to preserving the sanctity of clinical autonomy and thus protecting the essence of confidence that is the foundation of the patient-physician relationship,” said Dr. Bourgeois.

TMA is the largest state medical society in the nation, representing more than 51,000 physician and medical student members. It is located in Austin and has 110 component county medical societies around the state. TMA’s key objective since 1853 is to improve the health of all Texans.
