The Texas Medical Association and TMA PracticeEdge have joined a new partnership that supports independent physician practices transitioning to value-based care.
The Partnership to Empower Physician-Led Care (PEPC) announced its launch Thursday, embarking on an effort to support value-based care to “reduce costs, improve quality, empower patients and physicians, and increase access to care for millions of Americans through a competitive health care provider market.”
Independent physicians make up nearly half of the physician workforce, according to a release about the partnership. But the role these physicians play in leading the movement to value-based care is overlooked.
“Independent physicians in Texas are being increasingly squeezed by regulatory burdens and rapid provider consolidation,” Louis J. Goodman, PhD, TMA’s executive vice president and chief executive officer, and CEO of TMA PracticeEdge, said in the release. “We are pleased to join PEPC to help relieve this pressure so our physicians can get back to caring for their patients.”
TMA and PracticeEdge are among the partnership’s founding members along with Aledade, a Maryland-based company that helps primary care physicians create tech-enabled accountable care organizations. The California Medical Association, Florida Medical Association, American Academy of Family Physicians, and Medical Group Management Association are also founding members.
According to the release, PEPC will focus on advocacy and education to:
- Advance physician-led alternative payment models;
- Ensure an equitable policy framework that promotes choice and provider competition;
- Create new opportunities for physicians in commercial markets; and
- Support consumer-directed care.
Kristen McGovern, a former official at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the federal Office of Management and Budget, is PEPC’s executive director.
