TMA to Give Thousands of Helmets to Kids in October

 Sept. 28, 2017

  • WHAT: Physicians and other volunteers in the Texas Medical Association’s (TMA’s) Hard Hats for Little Heads program will give away nearly 3,500 free bicycle helmets to Texas children in October. The TMA doctors and other volunteers will host free helmet giveaways in their communities to teach parents and children the importance of wearing a helmet — especially one that fits properly — to prevent head injuries.

TMA created the Hard Hats for Little Heads program in 1994 to help prevent child head injuries by encouraging helmet use for all sports on wheels: bicycling, skateboarding, rollerblading, and riding a scooter. TMA has given more than 280,000 helmets to Texas children since the program began. TMA celebrates the program’s anniversary each year in October with Hard Hats for Little Heads Month.

  • WHEN: Oct. 7-29, 2017 (see schedule below for your local event)

  • WHERE: Communities statewide, including yours

  • WHO: TMA physicians, medical students, TMA Alliance members (volunteers who are TMA physicians and TMA members’ spouses), county medical societies, and local organizations

Texas physicians urge Texas children to be active but want them to be so safely. A bike helmet, when worn properly, can prevent up to 85 percent of head injuries. Head injury is the most common cause of death and serious disability from bike crashes.

Below is a schedule of TMA’s Hard Hats for Little Heads events across the state. Look for one in your community.
