TMA to Give 3,600 Texas Kids a Bike Helmet in October

Sept. 29, 2016

  • WHAT: The Texas Medical Association’s (TMA’s) Hard Hats for Little Heads program will give away more than 3,600 free bicycle helmets to Texas children in October. TMA physicians and other volunteers will host free helmet giveaways in their communities to teach parents and children the importance of wearing a helmet, especially one that fits properly, to prevent head injuries.

TMA has given more than 250,000 helmets to Texas children since creating the Hard Hats for Little Heads program in 1994. TMA started Hard Hats for Little Heads to help prevent head injuries by encouraging children to wear a helmet for all sports on wheels: bicycling, skateboarding, rollerblading, and riding a scooter — and to promote physical activity.

  •  WHEN: Oct. 1-29, 2016
  • WHERE: Communities statewide, including yours (see schedule below)
  • WHO: TMA physicians, medical students, TMA Alliance members (volunteers who are TMA physicians and TMA members’ spouses), county medical societies, and other local organizations

Texas physicians urge Texas children to be active but want them to stay safe. A bike helmet, when worn properly, can prevent up to 85 percent of head injuries. Head injury is the most common cause of death and serious disability from bike crashes.

Below is a schedule of TMA’s Hard Hats for Little Heads events across the state, including one in your community.
