In his enticing article "Knowledge and Wisdom: Pass It Forward," published in the November 2015 issue of Texas Medicine, Lawrence F. Buxton, MD, asks an important question: When physicians retire, what happens to the knowledge and wisdom they have acquired? Figuring that these valuable assets are being wasted, he poses an idea wherein retired or semiretired Texas physicians could be organized to provide free consultations by phone, fax, or email to young health care professionals throughout the state. He also outlines the hypothetical steps it would take to implement such a program.
As a full-time medical educator for the past 55 years, I consider Dr. Buxton's idea to be unique, brilliant, and compelling. Because its potential health benefits for the citizens of Texas are unlimited, I would welcome the opportunity to participate when I retire.
