Situational Data Element

Situational data element: Situational refers to the fact that use (i.e., inclusion or exclusion) in the Implementation Guides to the HIPAA transaction standards varies, depending on the data content and the business context. For example, baby's birth weight is obviously a situational data element that pertains only when a claim is for a delivery. Situational, however, does not mean optional. When the situation exists, the element must be used.
