CMS Proposes Flexibility for Meaningful Use Program

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released proposed rules that allow flexibility for electronic health record (EHR) certification and extend Stage 2 meaningful use. TMA will carefully review the proposal and submit comments by July 21, the end of the comment period.

TMA views this as a positive step as many EHR vendors have not yet achieved their 2014 certification, required for meaningful use attestation in 2014, regardless of stage. The timing of the proposed rules is less than ideal as many physicians need to take action by July 1, 2014, to prevent an EHR penalty in 2015. As with many regulations, the devil is in the details.

Stay tuned for more information and guidance on how physicians should proceed with these newly announced proposed rules.
